When your netbook suddenly thinks it’s a lampshade

Last night, my new best friend ( netbook) decided it just didn’t feel like connecting to the internet.

After trying to connect up several times, I ran the Windows diagnostic program and  it identified a winsock / registry problem. After running the ‘fix’, I had to restart for the changes to take effect. Relieved, when my netbook restarted, I tried to jump back on the ‘net…… and nothing……

To cut a long story short, I decided to do a ‘full restore’, and this is where the sheer joy of stripped down ‘netbooking’ and ‘cloud computing’ come in. With virtually all my work files online, and pretty much nothing but the O.S. on my laptop, the only thing I stood to lose was my time, and some browser configuration.

The good news:

The ‘restore’ worked and less than 2 hours later I was back on line, with no vital documents / files / apps lost. Can you imagine doing that with a full blown, application and file laden laptop?

Being ‘Social’ – and keeping on top of it all

flockFacebook, MySpace, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Digg, Picasa, Blogger, WordPress, Delicious, email, webmail, RSS feeds etc, etc…….. It just goes on and on. I’m convinced that some people spend more time updating / maintaining their social media presence than actually doing anything else!

However, help is at hand – well, at least there’s a way to put them all in one place, a kind of Social Media portal. A browser that let’s you set up your own accounts and services, feeds, blogging tools, media sharing and favorites – all so you can access from within the one browser. It’s called Flock and it’s pretty damn good.

Flock also lets you drag media and links directly onto your friends icons for sharing and a number of other cool initiatives that I’m yet to get my head around at the moment. It installs easily, is another Mozilla product, and the ‘Welcome’ video helps get you started straight away.

So, does it replace the other main browsers? Well, to be honest I don’t think so.

Of course, you can use it as a normal browser as well, but by the time you have your side bar up either showing your friends, accounts or feeds, and if you have the media bar up as well, you have a much reduced area of on-screen real estate with which to browse the web. However, I’ve been using it virtually exclusively over the last few weeks on my netbook, as a centralised ‘social comms hub’, and for that, it’s better than anything else I’ve seen around to date.

Netbooks and living in the ‘cloud’

There’s so much hype around ‘cloud computing’ and netbooks that I thought I’d try living this way for a few weeks to see how practical it really is.

I was going to be overseas in Thailand for a week or so and I made the brave decision to get a netbook and leave my Macbook behind – I figured that the weight / space saving, combined with signing up for some online apps and productivity ‘cloudware’ would be a good way to test things out.

I originally wanted to try to be a ‘netbook purist’, so spent a while looking for a small footprint (9″ screen), linux based machine with an atom processor chip and preferably an SSD, however, the first thing I realised is that we’re a little underwhelmed with choice in NZ, so ended up with an Acer Aspire One.


Weighing around a kilo, the Aspire One has the atom chip, an 8.9″ screen, but carries a 120GB spinning hard drive – also, it comes with Windows XP installed – hmmmm, so a few compromises had to be made. Sadly, although the netbook itself is compact and light, it’s spoilt by a bulky, cumbersome charging unit. The sales guy tried to sell me Microsoft Office as well, but that really would have been cheating, so I politely declined. Read the rest of this entry »

Adfest 2009 – the party’s over

Well, just about to check out of Pattaya for the long flight home.

The final night of the awards was last night, and although there was no ‘after party’, everyone seemed to split up into groups to carry on. I’m not going to try and relay all the award results here but you can see who won what here. 

Last thoughts on Adfest. It’s a lovely festival, and although there were the occasional glitches, it adds to the charm of what is a very friendly show. There’s some amazing talent in the region, but a lot less of the rampant egotism seen in other ‘more western’ parts of the world.

I’ve made some new friends from countries throughout Asia Pacific, people I’ll stay in contact with and hope to see again soon. The other juries and jury presidents were cool people, and somehow, being at Adfest seemed to allow them all to be very approachable. The quality of speakers was excellent, and the sponsors that were there have given great support to the festival. The organisers of Adfest are doing a terrific job, and even though this was a difficult time for them, the whole event was positive, pragmatic and upbeat.

The continuous theme for all future Adfests will be “Made in Asia”, and I think that means friendly, warm, humble and talented!

OK, I’ve got a car waiting to take me to the airport so must go now.

Adfest – the final night, “And The Cyber Best in Show is…”

What a difference –  Any glitches from earlier in the week were resolved by the ‘finale’ and although a long evening, there was a lot  of categories to get through. The show was pretty slick, and to keep it moving, all the awards were given out throughout the sit-down dinner. The categories awarded tonight included Film, Radio, outdoor, Lotus Roots, Innova, and of course, Cyber Lotus.

The Cyber ‘Best in Show’ was the stunning Sagami Condoms campaign, ‘Love Distance’ by GT Inc, Tokyo. Koshi Uchiyama, (our Jury Chairman), felt it

would be inappropriate for him to speak about why it had been selected, as

this entry came from his own agency.  Because of this, the organisers of

Adfest asked me to explain and announce the winner on the night – a task I

was delighted to do on behalf of the Cyber Jury.

Adfest 2009 – the festival begins

We did our final round of judging, to select the ‘Cyber Lotus Best in Show’, and to nominate some work for the new Lotus Roots category.
Like the other judging rounds, there was passionate discussion by all members of the jury, and we’re totally satisfied with what we’ve selected as the 2009 ‘Best in Show’, but again, details will be kept under wraps until Saturday evening’s Awards Ceremony.

Adfest 2009 – the judging is over (nearly)

The last few days have been a bit of a blur – 17 hours after getting to Wellington airport, I arrived in Pattaya, Thailand for the final rounds of judging the 2009 Cyber Lotus categories.

With just over three hours sleep, on Monday morning, off we went on our journey to find this year’s winners. Thankfully,I was kept well and truly awake because there were two full days of intelligent and passionate discussion and debate, with plenty of laughs and quality work for us to go through. Adfest Cyber Lotus – first round impressions

A high proportion of the entries were ‘competent’ which is a big improvement on some shows I’ve judged, where a huge amount of entries were quite awful and probably the result of some of the bigger agencies flooding the shows with ‘volume’ over ‘quality’.

Is this a sign that standards are generally rising? Or just that these tough economic times have forced agencies to be more selective about what they enter? I’m not sure, but whatever the reason, it’s an encouraging trend. However, ‘competent’ will not win awards – competent is just a hygene factor.
